Tim Smith is Director of Risk and Compliance Advisory at Baker & Partners.
Tim joined Baker and Partners in 2017 to spearhead the company’s expansion into providing multi-jurisdictional compliance consultancy, advice and solutions to the financial services market. He provides expertise on all aspects of compliance, AML and sanctions, data protection and prudential regulation.
Tim brings extensive experience in several areas to the firm, covering retail, wealth management, trust and asset finance, as well as the banking of funds, large corporates and wholesale.
Tim Smith has 20 years’ experience in financial services and held an executive level role at RBS International. In this role, Tim administered all aspects of compliance and led over 24 specialists, covering six jurisdictions and servicing customers in over 160 countries.
Tim is an expert in compliance and risk. During his time at RBS International, Tim took the roles of designated Compliance Officer, Money Laundering Compliance Officer and Money Laundering Reporting Officer. He was also made RBS’ designated Material Risk Taker (MRT) due to his compliance accountabilities for an international bank. This is where under EU guidelines the MRT is deemed to have a material impact on the firm’s regulatory and risk impact at a consolidation group level.
As Head of Compliance for an international bank, Tim took a leadership position on all aspects of compliance following the 2008 banking crisis including the Arab Spring, raising the bar on AML and Sanctions, the implementation of anti-bribery and corruption, data protection, RDR (investment regulation), recent bank miss-selling reviews, AML remediation, and embedding the move from compliance to a wider ‘Conduct Culture’.
