CAYMAN – Jersey’s leading independent specialist offshore litigation and dispute resolution firm, Baker & Partners, today announces the hires of Adam Crane, Partner, and Nicosia Lawson, Associate, to the firm’s growing Cayman office.
Adam acts on a range of insolvency and dispute resolution matters, focusing on complex and multi-jurisdictional insolvencies and restructurings, and asset recovery cases. In particular, he has extensive experience in offshore and cross-border proceedings involving collapsed or distressed hedge funds and private equity funds, as well as shareholder disputes, trust & estate disputes, and civil fraud proceedings involving the misappropriation and concealment of assets.
Adam advises insolvency practitioners, court appointed officers, creditors, debtors, financial institutions, directors & officers, investors, and shareholders in their disputes. He notably acted for the joint official liquidators of funds related to Bahraini bank Awal in defence of claims by Saudi conglomerate Ahmad Hamad Algosaibi & Brothers in the highest value fraud case in the history of the Cayman Islands and for the Hong Kong appointed Interim Receivers of XiO Fund I LP related to their recognition in the Cayman Islands and the execution of their court ordered duties, including identifying and securing assets as well as investigating the affairs of the business.
He joins Baker & Partners from HSM Chambers, where he was Head of Restructuring and Insolvency. Prior to this, he was a Partner at Patterson Law in Canada, where he was Chair of the Insolvency and Financial Recovery practice group.
In addition to Adam, Nicosia Lawson joins the firm as an Associate. She advises clients on a variety of insolvency and dispute resolution matters, including shareholder disputes, winding up proceedings, liquidations, and restructurings.
Nicosia previously spent several years at Mourant Ozannes, where she worked in the firm’s dispute resolution, restructuring and insolvency practice in Cayman, as well as undertaking a secondment to the firm’s team in Hong Kong for two years.
The two hires mark the latest step in a period of major expansion for Baker & Partners, and the Cayman offering in particular, following the firm’s launch in the jurisdiction in 2020 with the appointment of Robert Jones as Managing Director. These hires take place within a wider context of global growth for the firm, with Lynne Gregory appointed as Partner earlier this year and last year seeing the hires of Stephon Grey as Head of Forensic and Investigatory Services in Trinidad, Senior Counsel Gerard Clarke and Consultant Marcus Wide in London, and the launch of Baker Regulatory Services, spearheaded by CEO Barry Faudemer, in Jersey.
Robert Jones, Managing Director of Baker & Partners (Cayman) Limited, commented:
“We’re incredibly pleased to welcome Adam and Nicosia to the team as we continue to grow our footprint in the Cayman Islands. They bring with them a great depth of multi-jurisdictional expertise across commercial litigation and civil fraud, and will undoubtedly be highly prized by our clients both here in Cayman and internationally.
“We have ambitious plans for our operations in Cayman. Our reputation as a leading offshore litigation firm where partners really take the lead on work, combined with our conflict free model, mean we’re ideally placed to provide a unique offering for what continues to be a key international finance centre and offshore jurisdiction.”
Adam Crane, Partner at Baker & Partners (Cayman) Limited, added:
“It’s hugely exciting to be joining Baker & Partners, a firm recognised as leaders in offshore litigation, at such a pivotal time of growth for the business.
“With Cayman’s regulatory landscape rapidly evolving and a potential wave of insolvencies and restructurings on the horizon as we deal with the fallout from Covid-19, it’s vital that businesses equip themselves with the right counsel. I greatly look forward to working alongside Robert and our talented team to deliver the best outcomes and results for our clients.”
