Gurprit is experienced in commercial/chancery dispute resolution and financial services law and regulatory law. She is an experienced interlocutory and trial advocate in disputes involving company and insolvency law, public law, confiscation, asset recovery, and corporate fraud. She is a member of the Bar of England and Wales and of the British Virgin Islands.
Commercial and Civil Disputes
Gurprit has a broad commercial litigation practice and has experience of preparing lengthy trials and providing advice in complex fraud cases, shareholder disputes, insolvency, anti money laundering, confiscation, and trusts cases.
She previously worked at an international law firm based in the BVI in 2019, working on large scale BVI company/commercial and trusts litigation for clients from multiple jurisdictions, including Russia, Switzerland and Hong Kong. Cases included Alfa Bank v Emmerson, Wilton v AFS Trustee, a complex multi-jurisdictional trusts dispute, Bowview Overseas Limited and Others (2020), and Asiyah Grant v Javier Maduro in the Eastern Caribbean Supreme Court, Court of Appeal (2019). She continues to be instructed in BVI matters and is currently instructed as junior counsel in a shareholder dispute, IsZo Capital v Nam Tai inc. & Others (2020).
Gurprit has acted for insolvency practitioners and corporates in the UK and Offshore, with work including advising directors on fraudulent misrepresentation, advising on auditor negligence during administration, cross-border insolvency, claims against banks for forced insolvency, directors’ disqualification, and winding up in the public interest. She also has experience of criminal cases involving restraint orders and receivership.
Gurprit was a Pegasus Scholar in Hong Kong in 2015, where she worked on corporate fraud matters and interned at the Hong Kong International Arbitration Centre. Gurprit has also advised on Jersey Trust disputes and worked on commercial and corporate fraud matters relating to the Isle of Man.
Banking & Financial Services
Gurprit advises and represents banks, other corporates and individuals dealing with regulatory issues or facing FCA sanctions. She understands the challenges faced by financial institutions internationally, and by both corporates and individuals in dealing with Investigations, Compliance, Governance & Risk issues.
Gurprit has an in-depth knowledge of the FCA Handbook, the Financial Services and Markets Act 2000 (‘FSMA’), s.166 reviews, market abuse and money laundering regulations. She assisted the FCA team in the preparation for the leading case FCA v Asset Land  UKSC 17. She was also a member the FCA’s specialist wholesale team that investigated LIBOR / EURIBOR and TIBOR manipulation by individuals at Investment banks.
Gurprit has acted in numerous mis-selling cases for and against financial institutions. She advised HSBC on complex consequential loss claims, as part of the FCA led review into mis-selling of derivatives by banks. She has also assisted Sir William Blackburne in the Independent Review into RBS’s Global Restructuring Group. She writes regularly and speaks on issues concerning commercial litigation, insolvency, banking finance and regulatory matters.
