Matthew Maletroit is a Partner in Baker & Partners Jersey office, having joined the firm in September 2026.
Matthew is an experienced Jersey Advocate with extensive courtroom experience in the most serious and complex cases. Matthew was sworn-in as an Advocate of the Royal Court in 2013. He has since appeared before every court and tribunal in Jersey in both civil and criminal proceedings.
Matthew began his career at the Law Officers’ Department where he initially specialised in regulatory matters, international law and human rights. Matthew worked on high profile civil litigation including the Historic Child Abuse Inquiry, proceedings concerning the removal of LVCR, disciplinary proceedings concerning members of the Law Society of Jersey and Honorary Police Officers, and human rights disputes. He also routinely conducted proceedings in the Petty Debts Court and the Royal Court on behalf of the Treasurer of the States, the Employment Tribunal on behalf of the States Employment Board, and the Mental Health Review Tribunal on behalf of the Minister for Health and Social Services.
In 2014, Matthew began prosecuting criminal cases on behalf of the Attorney General and he was appointed as a Crown Advocate in the following year. Since then, he has built his reputation as one of Jersey’s leading criminal litigators, having prosecuted countless high-profile cases involving murder, attempted murder, manslaughter, sexual offences, drug-trafficking, money laundering and fraud. Matthew was appointed as a Senior Legal Adviser in 2021. In recent years, Matthew has conducted some of the most complex criminal cases ever to be presented to Jersey’s courts. He has been commended for the quality of his work, his collaborative approach to case strategy, his meticulous attention to detail, and his ability to reduce complex matters into clear and persuasive arguments whilst working under considerable pressure.
Matthew has served as Acting Attorney General for Jersey on numerous occasions, and he continues to be instructed by the Law Officers in serious and complex cases.
Matthew is available for instruction for a broad range of litigation and dispute resolution work including fraud and asset recovery, public and administrative law, employment law, trusts litigation and complex commercial disputes.
